LISTEN ON:
When I talk about scaling intellectual property, it freaks out a lot of people. They feel like they've got nothing big or bold enough for anyone to care about. And I understand why the term does that, because it can make you think you need something huge or high value or bold enough that anyone would actually want to protect it.
You do have it. You absolutely do.
Your intellectual property is your ideas, the original thinking that can only come from you. It's the things you find weird that nobody else gets, and the things you say and think are completely normal while other people are going how the heck does she do that, that is absolute genius. Those conversations, those thoughts, are the thing that can only come from your brain.
The question I keep coming back to is not how you get your thinking to more people. It's what structure lets that thinking compound in value, so it doesn't just sit in your Google Docs, or your endless notes on your phone, or in that half formed thought where you go that would be an amazing idea and then never do anything with it. What follows are 3 real conversations I had in a single week, each one hiding something the person couldn't see for themselves.
Most people undervalue their own expertise for one simple reason. They are too close to it. When something comes easily to you, when you've done it a thousand times, your brain files it under obvious and moves on. You genuinely cannot see that the thing you find effortless is the exact thing someone else would pay to understand.
That's the trap, and it's why so much brilliant thinking never becomes anything.
At a premium business level, your clients are not paying for information. What they are paying for is how you connect ideas, how you pull together information and insight into something that helps them get to their desired result faster. A machine can retrieve facts all day long. What it cannot do is keep up with the pace of how we, as humans, connect ideas. That connective thinking is your genuine edge.
So the first shift is recognising the value of what you already carry around. Not the qualifications or the polished frameworks, but the offhand observations, the advice you give without thinking, the pattern you spot in someone's business in 5 minutes that took them years to notice.
When you start looking at your thinking through that lens, the tone changes. You stop asking "how do I create a product" and start asking "what is the most valuable problem I solve, and who would pay properly to have it solved". That single reframe is where scaling a business built on your own thinking actually begins, and it's the thread running through every story below.
The first conversation was part of my consultancy work with a very well known female entrepreneur, someone recognised in the UK and working globally. She has sold 3 businesses for multi 7-8 figures. She advises the UK government on female entrepreneurship. She sits on the boards of serious companies. The lived experience she carries around scaling, exiting and leading businesses is a genuine gold mine.
She is deeply mission driven and impact driven, and she wanted to enable people to access her thinking. So she built a programme to do exactly that.
The obvious move would have been to create a course and sell it to as many people as possible. That's one way of getting your thinking out there, and it works. But we were thinking about how this could become so much bigger than that. When you take everything you know and pour it into a £47 course, you haven't scaled your expertise. You've discounted it. You've signalled to the market, to your potential buyers, that your thinking is just readily available, and that changes how they value it.
So we looked at it differently. The programme is the starting point, not the ceiling. That same thinking can be licensed into companies. People can be trained in the approach. They can get a qualification in it. There are so many ways to think about this that have nothing to do with simply creating a product and selling it to as many people as possible.
This is what really matters when you think about scaling intellectual property into wealth. Who you license it to matters. What they are doing with it matters. The spaces you build around it to support it matter. The exclusivity of access is not just about limiting who gets in, it's about keeping the value of the thinking in place. We built a premium positioning that makes the right clients see it as a genuinely valuable offer now, alongside a roadmap for how the thinking reaches far more people later through qualifications, training and licensing. More hands, but the right hands.
The second conversation was with one of my Calibration Mastermind clients on a call last week. She runs a membership, a marketing and content membership, and she has done a phenomenal job with it. It doesn't have thousands of people in it. What it has is such a high retention rate, which really matters in a membership, and results so good that people rave about it, tag her all the time and invite their friends in without being asked.
We started out talking about growth and retention. As it grows, how do you make sure it keeps the space and the culture people love, so that doesn't get diluted? And there was a real consideration underneath that. When you grow a volume based offer like a membership, more people means it starts to take up more of your time, so how does her time go into it while she also develops other parts of her business?
Then I asked her something that stopped her. "Why is it that we are just looking at you scaling this membership?"
She looked at me on the Zoom call and asked what I meant. So I said it plainly. "You could franchise this." She's already bringing in an in person element with events, so those could be hosted in other regions. "You could franchise the model and bring people in to run this membership on a bigger scale for you, using your approach, your rhythm of the week, your prompts and structured sessions, your original thinking that made the space what it is. Or you could license it." Plenty of people want to host a membership and a community exactly like hers and have no idea how to do it.
Both routes do the same thing. They let her original thinking, her intellectual property, be scaled without being capped by her time. We're not scaling her own business, with all the constraints of her time and capacity to set the vision and implement everything. We're scaling the thinking. Whether she takes it forward, who knows, but even shifting the conversation into that space has her thinking really differently about how she scales the membership right now.
If you're sitting there thinking this is fine for a multi exit founder or someone running a beloved membership, the third story is for you. It came from my group of school friends, a group I've had for 30-something years, the ones who knew me at school and now have children of their own. We manage 2 meetups a year at least, and I'd just come back from one before recording this.
We were in Wales. We went to the beach, and one of my friends, a physiotherapist who was our local lifeguard back at school and now does open water swimming, went swimming in the sea. When she came back she started telling us all this stuff about the safety of open water swimming, and everything she teaches her own 3 daughters, because we've just had this crazy heatwave in the UK. The 4 of us, all mums, were asking her question after question, because our children are getting older and we're genuinely worried about them going off to water without us.
I looked at her and said: "You could absolutely sell this information."
Her answer was instant and flat: "I can't. I don't know anything."
But she'd just spent all that time answering questions 4 worried mothers desperately wanted answered, on something schools won't teach. Kids get swimming lessons. They won't be educated on how to keep themselves safe going into open water as they get older. That is a high priority problem, and there are people who would pay to solve it.
We talked about how it could become an e-book with a funnel behind it, focused specifically on water safety for open water swimming. I said she could even leverage AI to take the information and insight she's got and help break it down into topics, because she's so close to it that she can't see why people would buy this, and she needs something to filter and show her the learning points in it. Whether she goes off and creates a whole open water swimming course for teenagers, I don't know. The point isn't what she does with it. It's how much of this kind of thinking you might be sitting on without recognising it.
Premium positioning, running a premium business, selling high ticket, thinking like a luxury brand, it all comes down to the same thing. You are solving a high priority problem for people who are willing to pay to solve it. That's what it is, just at a higher stakes level.
The physiotherapist is solving how do I keep my child safe near water. The founder I consult for is solving how do I help a business exit or sell for multiple millions. Same fundamental structure, a completely different level of problem. And the level of problem is exactly why one commands consultancy fees and the other sells an e-book. Neither is better than the other. They are simply different stakes.
That's why I'm able to charge for my consultancy at the level I do, because that's the problem I help people solve. It isn't about inflating your worth or performing exclusivity for effect. It's about being clear on the problem you solve and how high the stakes are for the person you solve it for. Get that right and you stop competing on volume and price, and start building something that holds its value as it grows.
Your most valuable intellectual property is often the thinking you dismiss as normal, the connections you make effortlessly that others would pay to understand.
Pouring everything you know into a £47 course doesn't scale your expertise, it discounts it and signals to buyers that your thinking is readily available.
Licensing, franchising, qualifications and training let you scale the thinking without capping growth at your own time, which is the real route to scaling a business built on expertise.
Premium positioning comes down to solving a higher stakes problem for people willing to pay to solve it, nothing more complicated than that.
To scale your intellectual property means growing the reach and value of your original thinking without simply working more hours. Rather than selling one product to as many people as possible, you build structures that let your ideas travel and hold their value. That can include licensing your approach to companies, franchising a proven model, or creating qualifications and training programmes. The aim is to protect the value of your thinking as it reaches more people, so it compounds rather than being discounted the moment it becomes widely available.
A course is only one route, and often the least profitable. You can license your methodology to businesses, franchise a model you've already proven, train others to deliver your approach, or offer a qualification in it. You might also package specific knowledge into a focused resource like an e-book with a funnel behind it. The smarter question is not what product to build, but what high priority problem you solve and who would pay properly to have it solved, then choosing the format that protects the value of your expertise.
Expanding intellectual property internationally usually means letting others deliver your thinking under a controlled model rather than doing everything yourself. Licensing allows companies in different regions to use your approach. Franchising lets partners run your model locally, including in person elements like events. Qualifications and training programmes let people become certified in your method, extending your reach while holding standards in place. The priority throughout is exclusivity of access and quality control, so who you license to and what they do with it protects the value of the thinking as it scales.

Welcome to Rich Work, the podcast for Welcome to Rich Work, the podcast for established women entrepreneurs who know they should be charging more, but haven't cracked the code on premium positioning yet.
I'm Rachel Pearson, a Global Brand & Business Strategist who spent 15 years building luxury brands like De Beers and launching an airline during a pandemic. Now I help women scale to consistent 5 and multi-6 figure months without the constant proving or over-delivering.

[00:00:00] The point is not what they are going to do. I have just had these conversations in the last week. But how much of this kind of thinking are you sitting on and not recognising that it is something you could be scaling, something you could be thinking differently about, asking a different question?
[00:00:27] Get out of the default of, 'Well, I need to sell this way. I need to create an offer because this is what other people have created an offer on based on my space.' Why? Because you have original thinking that nobody else has, so why would you create your offers the same way that everybody else does?"
Welcome to Rich Work, the podcast for established female entrepreneurs ready to turn their expertise into premium clients and consistent high ticket revenue.
[00:00:51] I am Rachel Pearson, global brand and business strategist, skincare obsessed and always distracted by booking the next mini break. Here you will learn how to position like a luxury brand, attract clients who love to invest, and build wealth that lasts, so you can create the business and life you want, not someone else's version of success.
[00:01:12] This is where premium positioning and building wealth meet, for women who are rewriting the rules. Let's get into it.
Welcome back to the second episode in this miniseries on my predictions for what we are going to see coming into the latter half of 2026 and into 2027. In this episode I am going to talk about how to scale your intellectual property, which, before you switch off, I know sounds dull as dishwater. It is not. It is one of the clearest routes to reaching more of your ideal client base without adding more hours to your week.
[00:01:44] If you are still sceptical, let me convince you otherwise, because you are going to walk away from this episode thinking, "I do have an idea. I have an idea that can make me more money. I have an idea that I am not being creative with."
[00:02:07] That is the whole point of what your intellectual property is. If you have not listened to the last episode, where I spoke about how I see the future of businesses being run more like media companies, even a single personal brand is becoming more like a media company, because you can distribute your thinking into more spaces, into more places where your ideal clients already are.
[00:02:35] Of course, that starts with what your thinking is. Often, when you talk about intellectual property, it is simply your ideas, the ideas that can only come from you, the original thinking, the things you think are weird that nobody else gets, the things you say and think are completely normal, but other people are going, "How the heck does she do that?
[00:03:01] That is absolute genius." Those things, those conversations, are your intellectual property. It is the thing that can only come from your brain. When we say the term intellectual property, or IP, it can freak you out, because it can feel as though you do not have anything big enough or high value enough or bold enough for anybody to care about or want to protect.
[00:03:30] And you do. You absolutely do. This is the conversation I have with a lot of my clients, where I help them take business models they have had for a long time, models that make them a great amount of money, and we look at them completely differently, because I look at them through their intellectual property.
[00:03:50] The whole idea of thinking like a media company is that you have originally thought that not enough of your ideal clients are listening right now. You can start a podcast, you can go on TV, you can go on radio, you can post 15 times a day on Instagram. That is not what is going to help it.
[00:04:16] It is about how we think about scaling your business differently by scaling your thinking. I am going to take 3 real examples that I have worked on in the last week, some of them just conversations right now, to help you see that what you are doing already is something you can turn into a bigger part of your business, a new revenue opportunity that comes from your thinking.
[00:04:54] I know I keep coming back to AI in these episodes, but I cannot do a series about the future of business without touching on it. AI is powerful in a lot of positive ways, and in some not so positive ways, like all technology. But the one thing it cannot do is keep up with the pace at which we, as humans, connect ideas.
[00:05:24] At a premium business level, that is what your clients are paying for. Premium clients are not paying for information, they are paying for how you connect ideas, information and experience in a way that helps them get their desired result faster. When we connect those ideas and make them accessible in a new way, that becomes another route to reaching more of your ideal clients. That is really what learning how to attract clients who are right for you comes down to.
[00:05:52] So let's go into the 3 examples, and they are really different. The first is part of my consultancy work with a leading, very well known female entrepreneur, not just in the UK but globally. She came to me because she has developed a huge amount of thinking and experience.
[00:06:24] She has sold 3 businesses for multiple seven and eight figure sums. She is an advisor to the UK government on female entrepreneurship. She sits on the board of incredible companies. She has vast lived experience of scaling businesses, exiting them, leading them and sitting on boards, a gold mine of experience. People can hear from her when she does interviews, conferences and talks, but she is so mission driven and impact driven that she wants to enable more of her ideal clients to access her thinking.
[00:07:12] So she has created a programme that allows that to happen. I cannot go into huge detail here, because some things are still being worked through, and this is to illustrate a point rather than to sell anything. I am involved in it, so I want to use it to highlight the opportunity.
[00:07:36] The impact this thinking can have is not just about creating a course that we sell to lots of people. That is one way of getting your thinking in front of your ideal clients, but we are thinking about how it can become much bigger than that. It can be licensed into companies. People can be trained in the approach.
[00:08:04] They can gain a qualification in the approach. There are so many ways to think about this that are not simply about creating a product and selling it to as many people as possible. This is what is really important when you think about your intellectual property. It is not about putting everything you know into a £47 course, because then you have not scaled your expertise.
[00:08:34] What you have really done is discount it, and you have signalled to the market, to your potential buyers, that your thinking is readily available, and that changes how they value it. Scaling IP into wealth means that who you license it to matters, what they do with it matters, and the spaces you build around it to support it matter.
[00:09:03] The exclusivity of access is not just about limiting who gets in, it is also about keeping the value of the thinking in place. Once you are clear on your ideal client profile, you can see exactly which clients this will hugely benefit, and the premium clients we know it serves see it as a genuinely high value offer with very relevant positioning right now.
[00:09:39] In the future we also have a roadmap for how the intellectual property in this programme can reach much further. That is not just through selling it as a programme, it is through qualifications, training and licensing, thinking about different ways to get the thinking into the hands of the right people, the ideal clients it is built for.
[00:10:08] Another example is a conversation I had with one of my Calibration Mastermind clients on a call last week. She runs a membership, one of her offers, and she has done a phenomenal job with it. It does not have thousands of people in it, but what she has created has a very high retention rate, which is really important in a membership.
[00:10:38] The results this membership gets, it is a marketing and content membership, are incredible, and people rave about it. They invite their friends in. They talk about it openly on social media every week. They tag her all the time because they absolutely love it. We were talking about how to grow it and about the retention strategy.
[00:11:08] As it grows, how do we make sure it keeps the space, the culture and everything people love about it, so none of that gets diluted? When you grow an offer like a membership, which is really more of a volume based offer, you have more people in it, and that can start to take up more of your time.
[00:11:33] So that was a consideration, how her time goes into this membership to keep it at the quality and standard she wants, while also developing other parts of her business. I said to her, "Why are we only looking at you scaling this membership?"
[00:11:54] She stopped and looked at me on our Zoom call and said, "What do you mean?" I said, "Well, you could franchise this." It is just a conversation at the moment, but the reason I am sharing it is that sometimes we look only within the space of how things are usually done, within the realms of how we originally started to build something. I said to her, "You have created something with an incredible community.
[00:12:25] You have developed it in a really intentional way. People absolutely love it. You have a rhythm to the week that works. You have prompts and structured sessions that mean people get so much from this membership, and other people would love to host a membership and community exactly like this, but they do not know how.
[00:12:53] So either you could franchise it, because there is an in person element she brings in with events, and those could be hosted in other regions. You could franchise the model and bring people in to run this membership on a bigger scale for you, using your approach to creating this community, your original thinking that has made the space what it is.
[00:13:22] We could franchise it, or you could license it." Both of these are models that let her original thinking, her intellectual property, be scaled without being capped by her time, because we are scaling the thinking, not scaling her own business. The constraints of her business are obviously her time, her capacity to input, to set the vision, to implement everything.
[00:13:59] Who knows whether she will take this forward, but even shifting the conversation into that space means she is now thinking really differently about how she scales the membership as it is right now.
And the third example, if you are still sitting there going, "Well, Rachel, I do not have a membership, and I am not an entrepreneur with 25 years of experience," comes from my group of school friends, a group of best friends I have had for over 30 years.
[00:14:35] We grew up together at school, we have grown up and now have our own children, and we have 2 meet-ups a year minimum. We try to push for more, and I went to one at the weekend just before recording this episode. I was talking to one of my friends, who is a physiotherapist, and she has an amazing amount of knowledge about so many different things.
[00:15:00] We were in Wales, and we went to the beach, and she went swimming in the sea. When we were at school she was the lifeguard at our local pool. She has always loved swimming. She does open water swimming now, and she was telling us all about the safety of open water swimming, all the things she teaches her own girls, because she has 3 daughters, and because we have just had this crazy heatwave in the UK.
[00:15:27] We were talking about how important it is that teenagers and children really understand how to go into water safely, not only where not to enter, but how to keep themselves safe as they cool down and get into the water. I looked at her and said, "You could absolutely sell this information."
[00:15:51] It is funny when we meet up, because none of them are in business the way I am. They are teachers, physiotherapists, interior designers, all successful in their own right, but I am the one who comes in and says wacky, weird things like, "Why do you not monetise this?" She said, "I can't.
[00:16:10] I do not know anything." I said, "You do. You have just spoken. We have all been asking you questions as 4 other mums with children we are so worried about in these heat conditions as they get older and start going out on their own. How do we teach them? How do we educate them? Because they will not learn this at school.
[00:16:30] They will have swimming at school, but they will not be taught this." So all you need in order to start thinking this way is to solve a high priority problem for people who are willing to pay to solve it. That is it. Yes, this podcast is all about premium positioning, but premium positioning, running a premium business, selling high ticket and thinking like a luxury brand simply comes down to identifying pain points that matter and solving them at a higher stakes level.
[00:17:05] It is a different level of problem. It is not "how do I keep my children safe?", it is "how do I help a business exit or sell for multiple millions?" That is why I can charge for my consultancy at the level I do, because that is the problem I help people to solve. The biggest pain points in business are exactly the sort of problem people will pay a premium to remove. That is the level at which premium clients invest. The clearer your ideal client profile, the more obvious this becomes, and when you truly know who you serve, identifying pain points that are worth paying to solve is far easier. So I said to her, "You have a high priority problem, and you have people who are going to pay to solve it."
[00:17:32] So we started to talk about the different ways she could do it, how it could become an ebook, and how she could build a funnel that sold that ebook around water safety, specifically for open water swimming. I said, "You could use AI to take the information and experience you have and help you sort it into clear topics.
[00:17:59] Because right now you are so close to it that you do not think it is worth anything, and you do not see why people would buy it. But because you are so close to it, you need something else to filter it and show you the learning points, the topics you would organise it into." Again, I do not know if she has gone away from our weekend thinking that was a crazy conversation with Rachel.
[00:18:20] I do not know why she wants me to monetise my knowledge into an ebook, but she may very well go away and create a whole open water swimming course for teenagers. The point is not what any of them are going to do. I have just had these conversations in the last week. The real question is how much of this kind of thinking are you sitting on and not recognising as something you could be scaling, something you could be thinking about differently, asking a different question?
[00:18:55] Get out of the default of, "Well, I need to sell this way. I need to create an offer because this is what other people have created an offer on based on my space." Why? Because you have original thinking that nobody else has, so why would you create your offers the same way everybody else does?
[00:19:15] So my invitation from this week's episode is this. It is not simply about getting your IP, your intellectual property, your thinking, to more people. It is about the structure that allows your thinking to compound in value, rather than sit there, not sitting in your Google Docs, not sitting in your endless phone notes, not sitting in that half formed thought where you go, "That would be an amazing idea," and then do nothing with it. When you build that structure, your thinking compounds, and you create a far more reliable way of reaching your ideal clients. I am Rachel Pearson, and this is Rich Work. I will see you in the next episode.
[00:19:45] Thanks for tuning in to Rich Work. I would love it if you left a review, it helps other women find us. In the meantime, follow me on Instagram, @rachelpearson.co, for a different take on premium positioning, one that is not about fitting a box. See you next week.
